[Note: Our Saturday sportscast indicated the Cane Cutters had lost, 4-2. However, 5-4 is indeed the correct score - read more below. We apologize for the error.]
Like the Dempsey - Tunney bout in '24, the Bronx Bombers - Pittsburgh Pirates Series in '27, and the Bruins - Rangers best of three for Lord Stanley's Cup in '29, tonight's main event had all the billings of a true headline maker. The Boys of Fabacher hosted the Darlings from Big D - Dallas, Texas - the Texas Marshals for a heavy-weight clash that was the cat's meow Saturday under the lights.
It was a back-forth-affair early as both teams were scratching and clawing from the opening bell. The visiting Marshals went up a tally in the first, but then Acadiana roared back with two sacrifice flies in the third, compliments of Kyle Cedotal, and the field general himself, catcher Mitchell Nau. The guests added three to their ledger by the eighth, to recapture the lead and looked hip to the jive up 4-2 late. With three outs remaining in the ninth it was up to the home team to determine if they were men or if they were mice. With two outs and two runners on, Southern Mississippi Golden Eagle Connor "Boom Boom" Barron walloped a three-run, walk-off big fly over the right field party deck to the delight of the Cane Cutter faithful. He rounded the bases unimpeded, unfazed in a mile-high gallop, like Man O' War at the 1920 Belmont Stakes. When the final bell sounded, the Acadiana Cane Cutters found themselves alone in the win column, 5-4 victors.
Stick and ball will return to the friendly confines of The Faub, and familiarity of the future, the 21st century, tomorrow night for act two versus the Lone Star State's Marshals!
