The attorney for Wade Lohse is requesting a change of venue for his client.
In documents filed in the Fifteenth District Court last week, Thomas Alonzo claims that media reports of a fatal crash in which Lohse is charged "amplified the feelings of grief and anger" felt by the victim's family and the community.
Alonzo also claims in the documents that the jury pool in Lafayette Parish has been tainted by "improper comments" made to KATC by public officials. Alonzo points to remarks made by District Attorney Mike Harson ("Lohse is hiding behind a computer.") and Deputy U. S. Marshal Corey Britt ("He's not being a man. He needs to take responsibility.") as being improper and "high prejudicial" to Lohse.
Alonzo submitted internet articles from numerous media outlets from across Louisiana, including KATC, to show how extensive the coverage of the Lohse case became.
Lohse is charged with vehicular homicide in the June 2012 death of Cacie Barras McGrew. Lohse walked out of a Lafayette Parish courtroom on March 25 just before his trial was scheduled to begin. He was arrested three weeks later in Philadelphia. He was extradited back to Lafayette and is being held in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center without bond.
Lohse's pre-trial is scheduled for July 22.
