Calcasieu men arrested after pushing trashcans full of batteries

Two Calcasieu Parish men learned trashcans are not a good place to hide allegedly stolen batteries after they were arrested for simple burglary and theft over $1,500 on Thursday.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office deputies were patrolling the area of East Telephone Road in Moss Bluff at 2 p.m. Thursday when they watched two people, later identified as Zachary D. Collins, 23, 525 Vickie Lane, Moss Bluff, and a 16-year-old juvenile, walking on the street and each pushing a trash can.

During further investigation deputies discovered the trash cans contained seven large batteries, worth over $1,500. When questioned by deputies Collins and the juvenile confirmed they stole the batteries from a business on East Telephone Road, according to police.

Collins and the 16-year-old juvenile were arrested and charged with simple burglary; and theft over $1,500. Collins, who is also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, was booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center. His bond was set at $10,000.

The 16-year-old juvenile was booked into the Juvenile Detention Center.
