BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Cajuns used back-to-back two-run singles from Haley Hayden and Lexie Elkins in the fifth inning and added two more runs in the seventh inning to defeat the WKU Lady Toppers, 6-4, and pick up their third-straight Sun Belt Conference series sweep on Sunday at the WKU Softball Complex.
The Cajuns (28-6-1, 9-0), got two RBI from Hayden and Elkins and added one each from Samantha Walsh and Sara Corbello to win their 13th straight game and 20th of their last 21 games, dating back to February 23.
Jordan Wallace got the start in the circle and picked up the win, tossing 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, improving to 13-2 on the season. Christina Hamilton tossed the final three innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and picking up her third save of the season.
The Lady Toppers took the lead in the second inning with a lead-off home run from Jacqueline McGill, sending the first pitch of the inning over the left field fence.
It took the Cajuns four innings to solve the WKU starter, defending SBC Pitcher of the Year Emily Rousseau, doing so with their back-to-back RBI singles from Hayden and Elkins. Hayden drove in Cassidy White and Kendall Smith and Elkins drove in Natalie Fernandez and Hayden, to give the Cajuns a 4-1 lead.
WKU responded with two runs in the fifth before the Cajuns could record and out, but Hamilton came in the game and shut the door, getting three outs with two runners on base and keeping them off the scoreboard anymore in the inning to salvage the 4-3 lead.
After a scoreless sixth inning the Cajuns added a pair of insurance runs, with an RBI single form Walsh, scoring Fernandez, and a bases-loaded HBP by Corbello to make it 6-3.
Hamilton would yield one run in the seventh but still managed to get the save after picking up a strikeout to end the game and aid the Cajuns to a 6-4 victory.
The Cajuns will leave Sun Belt action for a midweek game against Northwestern State in Natchitoches on Wednesday at 6 p.m. They will return home, and to SBC action on Saturday for the first two games of a three-game series against South Alabama at Lamson Park. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 2 p.m.
