Brianna Cherry had five hits and Sarah Draheim drove in five runs to help the Cajuns to a doubleheader sweep of Louisiana Tech on Wednesday night at Lamson Park. The Cajuns won the opener 4-1 before an offensive outburst in game two led them to a 9-1 win over the Lady Techsters.
"I'm proud of the kids." Coach Mike Lotief said after the sweep. "They had fight, and a good perspective. They understand what this journey is all about and we're just going to keep on fighting together."
The Cajuns scored all four runs of game one in the first inning. Natalie Fernandez kicked off the game with a walk and advanced to third on a Brianna Cherry double. UL followed that up with an error to bring in Cherry and then three walks and another error to take a 4-0 lead.
That would be all the offense the Cajuns would get, and need. Jordan Wallace tossed the complete game, allowing just one run on four hits over 7.0 innings. She racked up six strikeouts in the game while only walking one and hitting two batters. She picked up her 10th win of the season and is now 10-5.
Louisiana Tech cracked the scoreboard in the fifth inning following a single and a double for their only run of the game.
The Cajuns were quick to score in game two as well, putting three runs across in the first three innings of game two.
Sarah Draheim hit her seventh home run of the season, driving in Cherry and Fernandez to take a 3-0 lead with no outs in the first.
Matte Haack picked up a 2-RBI single and Sara Corbello hit an RBI single in the second to make it 6-0, driving in Fernandez, Leandra Maly and Draheim.
Cherry helped add to the lead in the third with an RBI single and her fifth hit in seven at-bats today. Draheim followed with a two-run double for her fifth RBI of the game. She finished game two 3-for-3 with five RBI and two runs scored. It was her first 5-RBI game of the season and third for the team. Fernandez also went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored, and Corbello went 2-for-3.
Victoria Brown pitched the complete game for the Cajuns and improved to 4-0. She tossed 5.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits and no walks, while striking out three batters.
"They all have areas that they are working on and are trying to get better. Today we took a little step towards that. Things aren't fixed, but they are getting there. The game rewarded the girls today. We need to keep working and fighting and figuring it out."
"We're trying to play free and easy and take our hacks." Draheim said. "We want to have the field as our meditation. Whatever happens, happens, as long as we lay it all out on the field."
The sweep gave Louisiana consecutive wins for the first time since Feb. 26 and March 1st, and improved their record to 18-9 on the season. They will look to find continued success in Mobile, Ala this weekend when they face South Alabama and return to Sun Belt Conference action. They will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 P.M. and a single game on Sunday also at 1 P.M. They will return to Lamson Park on March 29th for a Sun Belt series with FIU.
