LAFAYETTE, La. - The 2014 season for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer program is quickly approaching as the 33-member squad reported to campus Tuesday before beginning practice Wednesday morning.
Louisiana will have nine days to prepare before the squad welcomes Southern Miss on Friday, Aug. 15 for a 7 p.m. exhibition match at the Ragin' Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility. The team will open the season Friday, Aug. 22 when they travel to Sam Houston State to take on the Bearkats in a 6:30 p.m. match in Huntsville, Texas.
In 2013, head coach Scot Wieland guided the Ragin' Cajuns to an 8-7-3 record and a 5-2-1 mark in Sun Belt play to tie for second in the league and claim a No. 3 seed in the conference tournament, the highest conference finish in program history.
This season, Louisiana has high expectations for a squad that returns 17 letterwinners, including nine starters, along with 14 newcomers that are bringing their talents from all across the country.
Among the nine starters returning for the Ragin' Cajuns, three are coming off seasons that saw them earn all-conference accolades. Senior defender Grace Howell-Harries, the reigning SBC Defensive Player of the Year and SBC First Team pick, joins forces with sophomore midfielder Yazmin Montoya (SBC First Team) and sophomore forward Annika Schmidt (SBC Second Team) to lead the Ragin' Cajuns this upcoming season.
