LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana Ragin ‘ Cajuns football team opened its fourth week of spring practice on Monday as the team held a two-hour workout in full gear that was capped off with the two-minute drill.
With nine of the Cajuns' 15 scheduled practices in the books, fourth-year head coach Mark Hudspeth was pleased with his team's progression and enthusiasm heading into the final two weeks of camp, that will culminate with the annual Red-White Spring Game on April 12 at Cajun Field.
"I like where we're are (as a team) at this stage of spring practice," Hudspeth said. "We've come a good ways fundamentally and have improved each day. Our kids have gotten a lot of reps in and the work ethic of our veterans is really rubbing off on some of the newcomers.
"The enthusiasm with our guys right now is probably at an all-time high. They're working hard. They're really committed and they're coming out every day and ready to improve and get better."
After a third consecutive 9-4 record that included the Sun Belt Conference title and its third straight victory in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, Louisiana will for a repeat performance that will see the Ragin' Cajuns field its deepest team since Hudspeth took over the coaching reins beginning in the 2011 season.
"We have high expectations every year ... and that will never change" Hudspeth said. "We like our team right now. We've got a lot of depth, the most depth that we're ever had, and a lot of veterans coming back. We're looking forward to another exciting year. But, we're taking it one game at a time and will never look at the big picture. We're just going to look at it as one step at a time and stay within the process.
"Our goals are always going to be the same. And our last goal is the goal that we've still yet to accomplish, and that is to become a top-25 team. Last year when we received votes (in the Top 25 poll), we really, at first, started getting that push into the Top 25 poll and now we've got to break into it."
The Ragin' Cajuns will wrap up their fourth week of drills with afternoon workouts on Thursday and Friday before beginning their final week of practice on Monday.
Louisiana will open its 2014 season on Aug. 30 when it plays host to Southern University at Cajun Field. The Ragin' Cajuns will also host Louisiana Tech (Sept. 6), Georgia State (Oct. 4), Arkansas State (Oct. 21), South Alabama (Nov. 1) and Appalachian State (Nov. 22).
