Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns began spring football on Wednesday, the team’s first of 15 practice dates in March.

Practice was held outdoors on the practice fields and also inside the Leon Moncla Indoor Practice Facility.

“I thought it was a very spirited first day of practice,” head coach Rickey Bustle stated. “I told the guys before we started that we only have 15 days and we can’t waste a single second.

“The guys ran around well. I think they enjoyed being outside.

“This is a new Cajuns team. We have some spots to fill and positions are open. I want to see them compete.”

When asked to describe the biggest position battles, Coach Bustle’s response was simple.

“All of them,” he stated.

Only five of the 90 players on the spring roster are new to the team this semester. Running back Robert Walker (first-time freshman), defensive end Bernard Smith (Northeast Mississippi Community College graduate), linebacker Jelani Smith (University of Arkansas transfer), cornerback Lionel Stokes (Copiah-Lincoln Community College graduate) and strong safety Le’Marcus Gibson (via University of Hawai’i and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College).

“We had a lot of carryover on both sides of the ball (from last fall),” Bustle added. “We put in a lot of stuff today and you always want to see good carryover.

“We have different goals on offense and defense this spring. Defensively, we need to see how the new guys fit in. There are a lot of players returning on the defensive side and we should be further along on that side of the ball. Offensively, I believe our quarterback position can be even better and to develop some consistency with our young running backs.”

Spring football continues with workouts on Friday and Saturday this week. The team will add pads for the first time this spring beginning with Saturday’s practice. Bustle stated that the team will conduct some live work and there should be plenty of hitting.

The schedule will then be every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday for three weeks, concluding with the Annual Spring Game at Cajun Field on March 27.
