WACO, Texas - The Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team is set to open the 2013 fall season at the prestigious HEB Intercollegiate hosted by Baylor this weekend, Sept. 20-22, at the Hurd Tennis Center.
There will two 32-player singles draws and one 64-team doubles bracket. The tournament includes participants from three teams ranked in the top 25 at the end of last season, Baylor (12), Oklahoma (13) and Illinois (24).
"Baylor is a good place to start our fall season," head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "There will be three teams inside the top 25 competing this weekend with Illinois, Oklahoma, and host Baylor. With two large singles draws and one doubles draw it will put our guys against some great competition early.
"This is the first year our guys as a team have committed to a full-time process for development, and I think that we will get to see their progress here early in the season. I think we are ahead of where we were last year by quite a ways. I look for some great matches over the weekend."
Gonzaga, Idaho, Laredo Community College, Louisiana, UT-Arlington and UT-San Antonio will also be represented at the tournament.
The Cajuns will have eight players in action with Edgar Lopez, Jake Wynan, Jarred Wynan, Damian Farinola and Hunter Johnson in the Gold Draw in singles. Carl Alberton, Yates Johnson and newcomer Will Huyton are slated to compete in the Green Draw in singles.
"I'm looking for consistency this weekend and to compete for every single point at a high leve'," Jeffrey added. "I want our guys to be relentless on court and show toughness. They should be able to handle anything thrown at them this weekend, and have the maturity to work hard for the next one even if things don't go their way. This is going to be a fun weekend to see where we are as a team. I know all of the coaches and players are looking forward to it."
With rain in the forecast for the weekend Baylor will utilize the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center if necessary. Draws, results and live video can be found at the links above.
