LAFAYETTE - The Cajuns jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning but the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers scored three unanswered runs in the late innings to win the game 3-2, and ultimately win the weekend series on Sunday at Lamson Park. It was the first Sun Belt Conference series loss for the Cajuns since April of 2011 when they were swept by Florida Atlantic. The loss today dropped the Cajuns record to 16-10.
Brianna Cherry got the game started with a double to left center, and advanced to third on a wild pitch and Shellie Landry drove her home with a single on the next at bat. It was Landry's conference-leading 32nd RBI of the season. Sara Corbello added to the lead with an RBI single of her own, but it eventually ended the inning following a 7-2-1-5 double play.
It was the 13th time the Cajuns have scored in the first inning this season and the 19th time that they scored first. They are now 9-4 in games in which they score in the first inning and 13-5 when they score first.
WKU had runners reach base in every inning besides the first, and left the bases loaded in four innings with a total of 13 runners left on base in the game. They cracked the scoreboard in the fifth with an RBI double by Katrina Metoyer to cut the Cajuns' lead in half. Metoyer tied the game in the next inning with an RBI single this time.
The Lady Toppers took the lead in the seventh inning with a single to center, scoring a single run in three consecutive innings to win the game.
Jordan Wallace tossed the complete game for the Cajuns and was handed her fifth loss of the season. She allowed the three runs (two earned) on seven hits and seven walks, while striking out five batters. She is now 9-5 on the season and went 1-2 over the week.
The Cajuns will stay at home for a mid-week non-conference doubleheader against in-state foe, Louisiana Tech on Wednesday. First pitch for the first game is slated for 4:00 P.M. with the second game starting a half hour after the conclusion of the first. They will continue conference play over the weekend with a short road trip to Mobile for three games with South Alabama.
