Cajuns Defeat Middle Tennessee To Sweep Hattiesburg Contests

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team closed out the Hattiesburg, Miss. road trip with a hard fought 4-3 win over conference foe Middle Tennessee on Saturday to sweep competition over the weekend at the USM Tennis Courts.

"Tremendous effort today from the squad," head coach Greg Harkins said. "It's tough to win on the road taking two in a row including a 4-3 decision over a Sun Belt Conference semifinalist from a year ago. This will help boost our confidence as we return home for the next nine matches."

Louisiana (9-5) grabbed the doubles point for the second straight match as the duo of Sophie van den Aarssen and Nicole Breaux clinched the point with an 8-6 victory on court one.

On court three, Melissa Burckhartt and Juliette Clement continued their perfect spring season topping Alexandra Torres and Flavia Nagayama 8-6 to improve to 11-0 in dual play.

"Middle Tennessee is well coached and played solid from top to bottom," Harkins noted. "Once again the doubles was pivotal. Breaux and van den Aarssen rebounded from a tough loss yesterday to clinch the point. It was also good to see Clement and Burckhartt extended their win streak at No.3."

The Cajuns increased their advantage to 2-0 after Hannah Appleyard took a quick 6-1, 6-1 decision over Torres on court six.

Middle Tennessee (5-6) battled back though to take the lead after winning at the No.2, 3 and 5 positions.

Ahlqvist notched a 6-2, 6-3 win over Nayara Moraes at No.4 singles to even the match at 3-all.

The match was decided on court one as van den Aarssen defeated Yuiri Nomoto in a close 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) match.

"Appleyard, Ahlqvist and van den Aarssen got out in front and kept Middle Tennessee at bay long enough to close out the match," Harkins said. "The Blue Raiders did a great job of staying in the fight and stormed back from 0-2 to take a 3-2 lead. Both Ahlqvist and van den Aarssen stayed strong and closed out tough second sets to finish out the match."

Louisiana opens a nine-match homestand on Tuesday, March 12 at 2 p.m. when the Cajuns play host to Buffalo at Cajun Courts. For updates and info on women's tennis follow the team on twitter @CajunW10ns.
