The Cajundome could be looking at future changes after five acts have decided not to perform due to contract stipulations at a different country music festival.
As of now, George Strait and Luke Bryan both cancelled scheduled stops at the dome. Strait had been on the books for more than two years. Both artists will now be playing at Bayou Country Superfest.
"I guess it's just upsetting, you know you're excited to see them and they cancel, or it doesn't work out. It is upsetting," country music fan Elena Bragg said.
Bayou Country Superfest will be held in Baton Rouge over Memorial Day weekend. When artists sign up to play there, they also sign a contract limiting them from performing elsewhere. They aren't allowed to play within 175 miles of Baton Rouge in 2014, which means cities like Lafayette and New Orleans are out.
The organizers of Bayou Country Superfest, Festival Productions, Inc. say:
"Bayou Country Superfest is proud to be celebrating its fifth anniversary during Memorial Day Weekend next year at Tiger Stadium. Drawing fans from all over the country, the Festival has given Louisiana an important new event. As anyone who loves country music knows, the pool of country music artists is very rich with talent, and there are enough unique artists to appear at multiple venues within the same region in any given year."
"We're just hoping that we can make up for the shows that we'll be losing to the other event," Assistant Director of the Cajundome Pam Deville says.
She also says with 250,000 venues across the country, bringing acts to their stage isn't that easy.
"Promoters and artists look at where the greatest potential is to make money. And it all boils down to who's going to get the most money," DeVille said.
Losing these artists could hurt the Cajundome's bottom line. They may have to look at making changes if the holes in the schedule aren't filled.
"Down sizing can take many forms. One of which could be having to lay people off," DeVille said.
The Cajundome has already started reaching out to other artists to try and fill the open dates in 2014. The full lineup for Superfest will be released on Wednesday.
