Iberia Parish leaders are hoping a new RV park will drive tourists to the area. The Cajun RVera broke ground back in 2012 behind the SugArena Acadiana Fairgrounds right outside of New Iberia. The RV resort sits on 40 acres and currently fits over 100 RV sites. According to the Acadiana Fairgrounds Commission, there are plans to expand to over 300 RV sites, now that the ribbon's been cut. The champagne's been popped, and the Cajun RVera is set to open. Finally. "It's been a long process. This has been a long time coming. This is part of our business plan for the Acadiana Fairgrounds for 13 years now", says Karl Vincent, Chairman of the Acadiana Fairgrounds Commission.
The RV park fits hundreds of recreational vehicles, but it also sports thousands of feet of water, so you can kick back and relax. "We have about a 3,500 to 4,000 square foot pool with a swim up pool bar. We have a nice splash pad. 1,800 to 2,00 square feet. We have a 394 foot lazy river", says Vincent. Arcades and more all combine to make an experience that the Fairground Commission hopes will bring tourists and valuable tax dollars to the area. "About $150 million economic impact on this parish. This has tremendous potential. We've got 130 acres to develop that comprises the Acadiana Fairgrounds", says Vincent.
While there's plenty to see and do at RVera, those I spoke to today say you haven't seen anything yet. "This is the middle piece for our business plan. The next piece, if you look over your shoulder over there I can see about a $30 million civic center for the parish coming there", says Vincent. The official grand opening is scheduled for the week of the Cajun Hotsauce Festival April 11th, 12th, and 13th.
