SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator says he hopes to save money and help the environment by converting 13 vehicles to use cleaner-burning compressed natural gas as well as gasoline.
He says the four passenger vans and nine sedans travel a total of 17,500 miles a month.
The main reason for the conversion is that gasoline costs about $3.20 a gallon, compared to $1.81 per gasoline gallon equivalent of natural gas.
There aren't any public CNG filling stations in Caddo Parish. So for now, deputies will fuel up with CNG in Bossier City. If they run low in rural Caddo Parish they can flip a switch to convert back to gasoline.
A $173,000 grant from the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources is paying for the conversion.
