Slidell businessman Elton McCabe has pleaded not guilty to federal charges he participated in an alleged kickback scheme while working as a government subcontractor in Afghanistan in 2009.
The Times-Picayune reports the 53-year-old McCabe has a May 20 trial date.
Last fall, McCabe was detained in South Sudan on a kidnapping charge, but was released after a judge dismissed the charge for lack of evidence.
Federal agents arrested him three days after he returned to Slidell on a warrant related to a criminal complaint in connection with his work in Afghanistan years earlier.
McCabe is accused of accepting $60,000 in exchange for doing work for a subcontractor. He took $7,000 in cash and wired $53,000 to his wife in Louisiana.
