Business Owners Work Together To Stop Crime

Business owners in the Marcon Industrial Park in Carencro are putting up street lights in an area that's been in the dark for nearly 30 years.

In the last five years, businesses in the north Lafayette Parish park say they've seen an increase in overnight property thefts.

Lafayette Parish Sheriff's deputies are helping coordinate Entergy's installation11 new street lamps in the park.

Before this program started, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Community Services Unit conducted a complete threat assessment and noted that the entire industrial park was without any street lighting.

Floyd Dupre of Lafayette Alarm Services has a surveillance camera around his property, but he says he can't see anything in the pitch dark.

"You're not going to completely alleviate the theft problem, but we want to give people an extra set of eyes and tools to use to deter that stuff from happening," says Dupre.

The park is mostly made up of transit businesses.

Before a light can go up, owners have to agree to pay for the lighting in their area.

Without light, Dupre says darkness limits the usefulness of his cameras, and conceals theft activity.

If you would like to see more lights in your neighborhood, you can call Liz Duhon with Entergy at 272-3065.
