LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - Harold Thibeaux has retired as a bus driver from the Lafayette Parish School System.
The Advertiser reports the 62-year-old Thibeaux submitted his retirement package to school officials around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, just minutes before the Lafayette Parish School Board was scheduled to vote on whether to terminate his employment.
Thibeaux was driving a Lafayette Parish school bus in March when a kindergarten student, LaDerion Miller, became caught in the bus door.
Miller was dragged about 20 feet and later died at a local hospital from his injuries.
Thibeaux told authorities he did not see Miller when the boy's jacket became caught in the bus door because he was distracted by another student on the other side of the bus.
