Burglar Steals $100,000 Prosthetic Arm

The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's deputies are looking for the person who stole a man's prosthetic arm and pain medications from his Broussard home.

Monday morning, Jason Allen was getting ready for a job interview and noticed the duffle bag missing. The bag normally sits on top of his bedroom dresser.

This isn't just any prosthetic arm.

The arm is what's called a full-service prosthetic. The forearm is made out of a carbon fiber material. On the inside of the arm, there are sensors which allow Allen to have full flexibility of his arm and hand.

It cost $100,000.

Allen's wife, Melissa Allen, says the arm has helped him adapt to life again.

"For him to just feel normal and to be able to work, that was a big thing going to a job interview and them saying no you don't have two hands," she said.

In 2010, Allen suffered from a life-threatening medical condition. In order to save his life, doctors had to amputate his hand just above the wrist.

"Before he got his hand, we couldn't get him to go to a restaurant, because people stare," Melissa Allen said. "Something is missing for him, not to me not to my kids, but to him. If somebody looks at him he thinks that's what they see, that he doesn't have any hand."

Deputies say they don't have any leads on who took the prosthesis, but ask that if you have any information to contact the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office.
