Budget cut plans due Friday

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Cost-cutting plans for state agencies are due to Gov. Bobby Jindal's fiscal office by Friday evening.

Among the newest plans to be announced, the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism won't open six swimming pools at state parks this summer and will close two state historic sites, making them available for group tours by appointment only. Attorney General Buddy Caldwell's office announced that six full-time workers will be laid off this month.

Jindal ordered budget reductions to cope with a $248 million midyear deficit.

Among the biggest outstanding plans yet to be revealed are those of college campuses, who are bracing for an $84 million cut. The head of the community and technical college system, Joe May, says he expects layoffs, program cuts and closures of satellite campus locations.
