BROUSSARD, La. (AP) - The Broussard City Council has approved the introduction of an ordinance to impose a half-cent sales tax dedicated to recreation.
The measure was approved by city voters in the Nov. 19 election and the new tax is estimated to raise about $2.4 million annually.
City bond attorney Donald Cunningham Jr. said the sales tax was also approved for other recreation-related infrastructure and the council needed to pass the measure to impose the new tax according to Louisiana law.
Cunningham said even though the sales tax was supposed to go into effect on Jan. 1 it will be delayed until April due to a new administration joining the Lafayette Parish School Board, which collects all parish sales taxes and distributes them accordingly.
