Brian West announced today that he will be running for Lafayette Parish School Board District 9 in 2014.
"I have a passion for helping and educating others. These likely come from my experiences with Higher Education and the Air National Guard. I know that I can nurture a cooperative and collaborative culture on the School Board."
Brian serves as a full-time faculty member at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. In addition to this, he serves as a member of the Academy of Information Technology Board of Advisors at Carencro High School and as a religious education teacher at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Milton. He has also worked in the business community as a member of the Moody College of Business Administration and within the Executive MBA program at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, which has given him the chance to meet with local and regional business leaders in the community. These meetings have reinforced the concept that a strong public school system plays a crucial role in economic development for the Parish.
"A united school board with excellence as a common goal is not just what is best for our students, but is also one of the most important economic development tools that Lafayette Parish has."
As a noncommissioned officer (NCO) in the Louisiana Air National Guard with a 14 year career, he has led dozens of airmen on teams throughout the world to complete mission essential jobs. While serving in Afghanistan, he was required to make tough decisions on a daily basis in order to maintain the safety of those that served under him all the while still completing the task at hand.
Brian also understands the importance of civilian leadership. He was a proud participant of the Leadership Development Institute, a competitive leadership program offered by the Louisiana Community and Technical College System. This rigorous year long program exposes participants to training that enhances current skill sets through mentoring, hands on experiences, and opportunities to hear from local and nationally recognized education leaders.
Brian holds a Bachelor's Degree in Business Systems Analysis and Technology, a Master's of Business Administration, and is currently working on a Master's of Information Systems.
As an involved community member, he has also dedicated his time and talents to a great deal of community service projects, volunteering for several important organizations including Habitat for Humanity, Festival International, and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. He is also a member of the Youngsville Lions Club, Youngsville Chamber of Commerce, VFW Post 9210, Krewe des Amis, and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.
The District 9 seat is currently being held by Rae Trahan.
