The Lafayette Parish School Board will consider an introductory proposal for the 2013-2014 school calendar at tonight's board meeting. The proposed calendar calls for fewer school days (170) than the 2012-2013 calendar has (180). The academic year would begin on Wednesday, August 13 and end on Thursday, May 29.
The biggest proposed change to the schedule is the length of vacations for students. The proposed calendar combines all but one of the school board's teacher in-service days into student vacations, giving students a total of 38 days off during the session. This yea students only have 32 days off.
If the proposed calendar is passed, students would have three days off the week of Martin Luther King Day, a week off for fall break and Mardi Gras, six days off for Thanksgiving and spring break, and two weeks for Christmas/New Year. Students would also have off Labor Day and an additional teacher in-service day on March 28.
Teachers will have a total of 12 in-service days next school year, some of which fall on days that students will be on vacation. In addition to March 28, in-services will be conducted on the following dates:
August 8-9, 12 (Before students start school)
October 14-15 (Right before start of Fall Break)
November 22 (Friday before Thanksgiving Break)
January 21-22 (Right after MLK Holiday)
March 6-7 (Right after Mardi Gras Holiday)
March 28
May 30 (Day after students let out of school)
The school system will also hold an optional in-service day for teachers on August 5.
