BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - It's a sad day at the Baton Rouge Zoo.
Judy, an Asian elephant that's lived there since 1974, was found dead Friday. She was 46.
Median life expectancy for female Asian elephants is 46.9 years
WAFB-TV reports Judy - born in Kabul, Afghanistan - developed arthritis and stiffness in her knee/carpal joint and has been treated for the disease since 1983. Zoo veterinarian Gordon Pirie says the zoo gave her "quality of life and longevity beyond expectation."
A necropsy will be performed to determine an exact cause of death.
The zoo says she is survived by Bozie, a 37-year-old female Asian elephant.
