METAIRIE, La. (AP) - The state is giving away 85 vehicle booster seats on Saturday in Metairie.

The seats are for children too big for safety seats with harnesses but too small to be safe with only a seat belt. They fit children who weigh 40 to 100 pounds and are less than four feet, nine inches tall.

Using booster seats "greatly increases the likelihood that children are protected in crashes," said Bridget Gardner a nurse and injury prevention coordinator for the trauma center at the Interim LSU Public Hospital in New Orleans. "Without exception, booster seats should be used every time a child gets into a vehicle."

The giveaway is first-come, first-served. A parent or legal guardian must bring the child who would use the seat to Clearview Mall between 10 a.m. and noon Saturday.

Louisiana State Police, the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission and the Interim LSU Public Hospital in New Orleans are hosting the giveaway.
