"It is with profound sorrow that I make the following statement. This morning at St. Theodore/Holy Family School in Moss Bluff, a student acting alone inflicted upon himself a gunshot wound. This incident occurred at the very start of the school day. The school, civil, diocesan, and emergency authorities were contacted and responded immediately. Emergency professionals brought the student to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. Father Whitney Miller administered the Sacraments of the Church for the injured student and ministered pastoral care to the family. We are deeply saddened to announce that he passed away at 10:38 this morning. All of us in the Diocese and the ministry of Catholic schools remain greatly concerned for the safety and on-going care of our children. Our hearts and prayers embrace the child, his parents, his family, and friends. We truly appreciate the rapid response of our public safety officials, our clergy and Catholic school personnel, as well as our devoted health care professionals. This is a shock for each and every one of us. Our first concern remains for all of those affected by this tragedy and most especially the deceased and his parents. Please join us, the entire Church family of the Diocese of Lake Charles, in prayer to our heavenly Father for comfort, strength, and eternal peace."
