Bin Laden Took a Path of Fanaticism and Terror

UNDATED (AP) - Osama bin Laden was born in Saudi Arabia in 1954,
one of his father's 54 children. His path to militant Islam began
as a teenager in the 1970s when he got caught up in the
fundamentalist movement then sweeping Saudi Arabia.
In the 1980s, Bin Laden joined the Afghans' war against invading
Soviet troops where his interests converged with those of the
United States -- which opposed the Soviet occupation.
Upon returning to Saudi Arabia, it didn't take long for his aims
to diverge from his former Western supporters.
His war with the United States intensified, with the 1998
attacks on two U.S. embassies in Africa that took 231 lives and the
USS Cole that killed 17 American sailors in Yemen.
Then came the September 11, 2001 attacks that killed nearly
3,000 people.
The most intense manhunt in history came to an end Sunday, when
bin Laden died in a U.S. operation in Pakistan.
