Bills Targeting Traffic Cameras in La. Stalled

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Legislation to resolve New Orleans area lawmakers' complaints about automated traffic cameras in Louisiana have stalled, even as a city proposal moves forward.
A Senate committee Thursday rejected a bill by Sen. Danny Martiny, R-Kenner, to bar traffic cameras from generating speeding tickets at all. Meanwhile, Rep. Jeff Arnold, a New Orleans Democrat, voluntarily deferred his bill to require voter approval before penalties can be assessed from the tickets.
But a New Orleans ordinance would give those who object to getting tickets a remedy, which lawmakers and city officials say has been undermined by the automated system. The ordinance would let people who receive tickets from the traffic cameras appeal in city traffic court.
