The LSU Eunice baseball team used a three-run eighth inning to come away with a 5-3 victory in the opening game of their four-game series against Chipola College on Friday night.
Down 3-1 heading into the eighth, Stefan Trosclair cut the lead to one with his RBI double to right-center field before the Bengals tied the score when Brennan Bozeman scored on a wild pitch and Trosclair also crossed the plate via a Chipola throwing error on the same play.
Bozeman and Trosclair each notched two hits, while Jordan Romero and Ralphie McDonald both tallied a hit. Bozeman, Trosclair and Romero all collected doubles, while Troslair and Kyle St. Pierre (0-4) each drove home an RBI.
Jevan Huval, the third of the four Bengal pitchers on the night, earned the win following his 1 2/3 out of the bullpen. Sam Walley earned his fifth save following a perfect ninth to wrap up the night.
LSU Eunice starter Chad Reeves did not factor into the decision despite tossing six innings, allowing three hits, two runs and five walks while striking out eight Chipola batters.
Chipola used a two-run single to take the lead in the bottom of the second inning before the Bengals cut into the lead in the top of the sixth when Bozeman led off the frame with a double and later scored when St. Pierre reached fielder's choice.
The lead was pushed back to two when Chipola scored via a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh before the Bengals took the lead in the top of the eighth. LSU Eunice gave themselves some extra cushion in the top of the ninth when Derek Herrington walked, stole third base and scored on a wild pitch.
The Bengals and Chipola continue their weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader with the first game beginning at 1 p.m. and the second game to follow.
