LAFAYETTE - A seven-run fourth inning erased a deficit and a four-run sixth inning put the game out of reach as the Ragin' Cajuns baseball team rolled to a 14-6 win over Arkansas State here Saturday evening at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field to clinch the weekend series.
Louisiana (33-15, 14-9) won its fifth straight series and 10th in 12 weekends overall and will go for the sweep of the Red Wolves (24-13, 10-13 Sun Belt) at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Dylan Butler led the charge with six RBI on a three-run home run in the fourth inning and bases-clearing triple in the sixth inning. It was Butler's second game of six RBI this season.
Cody Boutte worked six innings and struck out a season-high eight batters en route to his Sun Belt-leading eighth victory.
Louisiana posted its 12th game of double digit runs and 28th game with double digit hits. The Cajuns reached 13 base hits for the fourth straight Sun Belt Conference contest.
Dex Kjerstad collected his 22nd multiple-hit game and Blake Trahan extended his season-best hitting streak to nine games. Butler, Trahan and Seth Harrison each moved over 30 RBI, giving UL seven hitters with 30-plus RBI this season.
The Cajuns broke a string of three consecutive ASU series wins at "The Tigue" and remained perfect in home series in 2013 (7-for-7).
UL scored first a second straight night and for the fifth time in the past six outings getting a run off a bases-loaded, fielder's choice grounder from Caleb Adams in the first inning.
The Red Wolves broke a string of five consecutive batters struck out by Boutte to start the game when Logan Uxa collected an infield single in the second inning. A hit by pitch gave ASU another baserunner, then a ground-rule double by Alex Potts and RBI single from Dustin Jones plated two runs and gave the Red Wolves a 2-1 lead.
Bradley Wallace held the Cajuns to single hits in the second and third inning and took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth.
UL would load the bases off Wallace in the fourth inning, then broke through off of reliever John Koch starting with a bases-loaded single by Harrison that drew a 3-3 tie.
With the bases loaded again just three batters later, Trahan drove a single up the middle to return the lead to the Cajuns at 5-3. On the very next at bat, Butler drove a three-run home run over the right field wall and the game got away from Koch and the Red Wolves.
Butler delivered the final blow in the sixth inning off reliever Seth McWilliams. After a Harrison leadoff bunt single and walks to Tyler Girouard and Trahan loaded the bases, he rolled a triple down the left field line to empty the bases and stretch the Cajuns lead to 11-4.
Kody Smith relieved Boutte in the seventh inning and held the Red Wolves scoreless until a two-out home run by Stuart Levy in the ninth inning provided the final margin.
Sixteen different Cajuns saw at least one at bat as the team produced double digit runs off ASU's pitching staff a second straight night. Entering the series, the Red Wolves had allowed double figure runs five times in 45 games.
Louisiana, which has now won a season-high four straight Sun Belt games, moved a season-high 18 games above .500. The Cajuns will attempt to pick up their fourth series sweep of the season on Sunday.
