Opelousas Police are still looking for the man who ran over a bicyclist and then beat him to death. Police say, Tyrone Mitchell was riding his bike on Adams St. Sunday night in Opelousas, when a dark colored oldsmobile with large rims hit him. That's when the driver of that car got out and beat him in the front lawn of a house. Residents in the neighborhood say they are shaken by the incident.
"It was a shock," said Frances Jones, who lives across the street from where the murder happened. "Something never happens like that here, and it just really surprised me because this is a quiet neighborhood."
"I was kind of shocked about it," said Joseph Jones, who live two doors down from the scene of the crime. "I knew the guy on the bike. I take walks all the time, and I always say him riding his bike."
Meantime, police say they are looking for a person of interest.
"We are still investigating witnesses and working for any and all information," said Opelousas Police Chief Perry Gallow.
Police also believe a female passenger was in the vehicle and witnessed the murder. They want her to cooperate with the investigation.
"We strongly urge that person, that female to come forward and provide us with information so that we can get to the bottom of this," said Chief Gallow.
Chief Gallow says if the witness does not come forward, she could possibly be charged as either a principal or accessory to the crime. He's also asking any other witnesses to contact the Opelousas Police Department at (337)948-2500.
