Basile Police Department is indicating that train operators tried in vain Wednesday afternoon to avoid striking a 12-year-old riding his bike across railroad tracks in Basile.
Officers said they received a report of the collision at 4:06 p.m. yesterday between a westbound Union Pacific train and a boy bicycling at the Magnolia Street crossing. Basile Fire Department and Acadian Ambulance also were dispatched immediately to the scene.
"The train's crew made every attempt possible to avoid hitting the child," Basile Police Chief Allen Ivory said.
Police said that the child was transported to Lafayette General Medical Center via Acadian Ambulance, but since has been transferred to another hospital. The chief said he was advised by the child's family that the boy's injuries are "very serious" but "not life-threatening."
