According to UL police, within the past thirty days, there have been 16 bicycle thefts on campus. Five arrests have been made and one suspect was arrested twice for two separate incidents.
All bicycles involved were either not secured or secured with cable locks. Locks were easily defeated by tool cutting cables or brute force to the locking mechanism. There are no bicycles reported stolen when utilizing a U-Lock.
All thefts reported are occurring at resident halls near Tulane/Taft, Legacy Park and the Conference Center. The target seems to be residence hall bicycle racks.
The best way to protect your bike is to have a good U-lock. Cable locks are easily cut and are highly discouraged. You should always use a U-lock to secure your frame, and a cable to protect your wheels, if desired.
Three bicycles have been recovered and UL Police are attempting to identify seven suspects from multiple incidents.
