A local sheriff's department's new uniforms are getting national recognition.

The Vermillion Parish Sheriff's Office and its uniform maker, Guidry's Uniforms, won the 2010 Best Dressed Sheriff's Department award.

"It's something our whole parish can look forward to, that we come out on top in the nation," says Deputy Randy Primeaux.

The award is given by the North American Uniform Manufactureres and Distributors at their convention each spring.

The Sheriff's Department sent in photos for the contest a few months ago, but did not think they would win. They believe they won because they recently got new uniforms, for the first time in 20 years.

The uniforms include equipment such as radios and guns.

Sheriff Mike Couvillon says the award is just a bonus-- the real reward is sharing it with the community.

"(They've) approached me, congratulated me on the award and I told them that's their uniforms. This is their sheriff's office," says Couvillon.
