Sheriff David A. Naquin announced the arrest of Freddie Sellers Sr. 68 yoa
of 1812 Thorguson Road, Berwick on the charges of one count of Cruelty to
Animals and one count of Failing to Properly Dispose of Decomposing Animals.
Sheriff Naquin advised the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office along with the
Humane Society, the Louisiana Brand Commission, Louisiana Department of
Agriculture, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
(ASPCA), St. Mary Parish Health Department and St. Mary Parish Animal
Control conducted an investigation into the cruelty to animals complaint
that was reported to St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office on 2-18-2010. Sheriff
Naquin also stated that the reports from the veterinarian that examined the
livestock herd indicated that Mr. Sellers was meeting the minimum standards
of care for his existing herd. Other witness accounts indicated that Mr.
Sellers would purchase animals from auctions that no one else would purchase
and bring them to his property to finish out their days. Sellers was
released on a summons to appear in court on 5-26-2010.
