Bengals Softball Wins Regional Opener

The LSU Eunice softball team opened play in the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament with a 10-2 victory over Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on Thursday afternoon, advancing the Lady Bengals to play in a second round contest at approximately 5 p.m. against the other first round winning team.

The Lady Bengals (56-2) collected 12 hits overall, with Carey Alexis finishing with three hits - all RBI singles - to lead the offense. In the circle, Destin Vicknair earned her 25th win of the season, tossing six innings and allowing five hits, two runs and two walks while striking out four Mississippi Gulf Coast (35-19) batters.

"We got some big hits. We were patient. Sophomores stepped up and got big hits for us, we played great defense. It was a big win, we needed that first win. It makes it a lot easier to win this thing," head coach Andy Lee said.

"I think our girls are ready (for either team). We will play and see what happens."

In addition to Alexis, LSU Eunice also received two hits each from Brooklynn Clark, Dani Cruickshank and Vicknair, as Clark and Cruickshank both added a double and an RBI while Vicknair drove in two runs and had a double of her own.

Taylor Boulet, Morgan Tauzin (RBI) and Raven Cole (double, 2 RBIs) all added hits as well in the victory.

Vicknair got the scoring started with her RBI single in the bottom of the first inning before the Lady Bengals added two more runs on bases loaded walks by Ashley Subervielle (0-2, RBI) and Cruickshank.

LSU Eunice plated three more runs in the third inning via Alexis' first RBI single of the game and Cole's pinch hit, two-run double to push the lead to 6-0.

An RBI double from Vicknair and an run scoring single from Alexis in the fourth pushed the lead to nine before Mississippi Gulf Coast plated their only two runs in the top of the fifth inning, using a RBI single and a fielder's choice groundout to bring the runs home.

The Lady Bengals tallied two final runs to finish off the game, first with an RBI single by Clark in the fifth inning, followed by an Alexis RBi single in the sixth.

LSU Eunice will play the winner of the Jones County Junior College/Pearl River Community College first round game later Thursday night with a scheduled 5 p.m. start. The game can be seen on Bengal All-Access and heard on KVPI 92.5 FM.
