The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to close the Belle Chase Tunnel this weekend for storm surge protection work.
Beginning Friday, crews will install pumps to remove water from the tunnel and will adjust new overhead roller gates. The gates will be tested on Saturday.
It's part of a New Orleans-area project to reduce the risk of storm surges with a 1 percent chance of occurring in any given year.
Project manager Ted Carr says the tunnel will close at 7 p.m. Friday. Traffic will be routed onto the Belle Chasse Bridge until 5 a.m. Monday.
