NEW IBERIA, La. (AP) - Beavers are wreaking havoc on drainage channels in Iberia Parish.
Public Works Director Kevin Hagerich says the department has contracted a local trapper to help alleviate the problems.
Lynn Rogers trapped 11 of the animals in one week in a drainage canal off Blanchard Road. To date, Hagerich says, several dozen have been captured.
Not indigenous to the area, Hagerich says beavers started appearing in the parish over the past several years. It's unclear when or how the beavers began migrating to south Louisiana.
Beavers are considered a nuisance animal in the state and special permits are not required to remove them.
