Local utilities customers have become the target of phone scammers.
According to the Better Business Bureau, LUS, Cleco, and SLEMCO customers have reported calls from a New Orleans-area phone number (504-355-8293) claiming to be collections agents and demanding credit card information. The BBB says the scammers even threaten to shut off the victim's electricity if the credit card information isn't provided.
The BBB reminds residents not to hand over any credit card information until you can verify the call is legitimate. The BBB also advises anyone who receives a call like this one to contact police and/or the Federal Trade Commission.
