On Tuesday, in Franklin, Shane Michael Kent ( age 24, of Southeast Blvd, Apt 2, Bayou Vista) pled guilty as charged to Simple Burglary of an Inhabited Dwelling as a second felony habitual offender since he had a prior conviction for simple burglary in St. Tammany Parish. Because he was a habitual offender, he faces a sentence of 6 to 24 years at hard labor without benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence. On August 3, 2008, Kent entered a home in Bayou Vista and came face to face with a witness who was at the home baby sitting and saw Kent walk right through the front door into the home. The witness went to call the police and saw his cell phone was missing, then later realized his wallet, keys, and shaving kit were all gone. The witness' wife returned home and called 911 around 1:02 A.M. and gave a description of a white male, wearing brown steel toe boots, around 6 feet tall, with a chinstrap type beard. St. Mary Sheriff Detective Robert Smith investigated and found Kent was released from prison for simple burglary around July 31, 2008, just a few days earlier. On August 8, 2008, Smith executed a search warrant at Kent's apartment and found Kent in possession of the exact brown steel toe boots the witness described that Kent was wearing the night of the burglary. Kent's mother even produced a July 31, 2008 Walmart receipt and said "I bought those for him when he got out of prison." Kent was arrested and has been in custody ever since.
