Baton Rouge Zoo has a new trumpeter swan

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo has a new arrival in its swan exhibit.

A juvenile male trumpeter swan is swimming in the lake surrounding Spider Monkey Island along with the zoo's female trumpeter swan.

Director Phil Frost says the swan arrived from the Bird Treatment and Learning Center in Anchorage, Ak., where it had been recovering after being rescued in Willow, Ak., found with an injured wing.

Rescuers determined the swan, though healthy, will be unable to fly again.

Frost says the zoo was chosen because it had a female trumpeter swan that is eligible for breeding.

Primarily found in northern parts of the United States and parts of Canada, the trumpeter swan inhabits freshwater areas. They are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and their populations are steadily increasing.
