The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office will begin random vehicle inspections to raise residents' awareness in an attempt to deter vehicle burglaries.
Sheriff Sid Gautreaux says most vehicle burglaries involve unlocked doors and valuables left in plain sight. He says if residents take a few steps to protect themselves, it will help cut such crime.
Gautreaux said Tuesday that deputies will randomly begin inspecting vehicles for unlocked doors, open or cracked windows, valuables in plain view. They will leave a pamphlet and checklist with a "pass" or "fail" marked for residents to review.
The pamphlet includes other safety tips for protecting against vehicle burglary.
