BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A sharp falloff in sales tax revenue in 2009 is forcing the East Baton Rouge Parish school system to scale down hundreds of millions of dollars worth of planned construction between now and 2019.
Superintendent John Dilworth released some initial proposals Monday calling, among other things, for closing three elementary schools in May, and drastically rewriting construction plans.
Dilworth said the ideas are preliminary and may change before he presents formal recommendations to the board, probably in November.
When the sales tax was renewed in 2008 it was projected to generate almost $871 million. The latest
projections show it generating only $779 million a shortfall of about $92 million.
