LIVINGSTON, La. (AP) - A prisoner who fled the Livingston Parish Courthouse Tuesday after being sentenced to five years on drug charges has been captured, the sheriff's office said.

Deputies captured Dennis Ray Caruso Jr., 23, about two hours after he fled the courthouse, said Perry Rushing, chief of operations for the sheriff's office.

Caruso had been in court for a sentencing hearing about 9 a.m. when the judge ordered him jailed, but he ran off before a bailiff could handcuff him, Rushing said. "The bailiff gave chase, but lost sight of him," he said.

He was later found at a residence in Denham Springs and was arrested without incident, Rushing said.

Rushing said Caruso now faces a charge of simple escape, which carries a penalty of up to five years. "If found guilty of that charge, the sentence would be added to the end of his existing sentence. Unfortunately, he's made his situation worse," he said.
