Baton Rouge Port Suspends Some Operations

PORT ALLEN, La. (AP) - Liquid bulk cargo operations at the Port of Greater Baton Rouge have shut down because of the rising Mississippi River.
Port Director Jay Hardman said water has submerged electrical equipment and pipes used to bring in molasses, petroleum and specialty chemicals. Westwary Terminal Group and CenterPoint Energy suspended operations because of the swollen river.
Hardman told The Advocate that operations at the Inland Rivers Marine Terminal off the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway are unaffected.
The port has been working with the Atchafalaya Levee Board to monitor levees along about a mile of port property.
