BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A Baton Rouge lawmaker is proposing a new 5-cent state tax on plastic bags, like those used to carry groceries bought at the store.
Rep. Regina Barrow, a Democrat, filed the measure Friday for consideration in the legislative session that starts April 8.
For enactment, the bill would require two-thirds support from the House and Senate along with support in a statewide election - making it a long-shot for passage.
The National Conference of State Legislatures says municipalities have enacted bans or taxes on plastic bags, but nothing has been done statewide except in Hawaii, where all counties have banned the bags at checkouts because of environmental concerns.
NCSL says lawmakers in eight states besides Louisiana have proposed bag taxes.
