Multiple agencies are searching for the body of a Baton Rouge fireman who drowned Wednesday near the Belle River Boat Launch. Officials say Jacob Lewis, 28, and his wife were setting crawfish traps in the area. Major Ginny Higgins of the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office says Lewis's boat flipped while he was piloting it towards its trailer. Higgins adds Lewis did not know to swim. Assumption Parish Sheriff Mike Waguespack, who is assisting with the investigation, says Lewis had taken off his life jacket moments before the accident. Waguespack also says he spoke with the Lewis's fire chief, who said Lewis had taken time off to be with his wife before she donated one of her organs.
The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is leading the investigation. Sheriffs' deputies from St. Martin, Assumption, Iberville, and East Baton Rouge Parishes; the Port of Baton Rouge; and volunteers from the area are assisting with the search.
