BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The East Baton Rouge Parish Metro Council as a whole took no position on whether to support a 10.6-mill property tax to revamp the parish bus system, voting instead to delete the item after a lengthy public hearing and debate.
The Advocate reports Councilwoman Denise Marcelle had asked the council Wednesday to consider a resolution supporting the tax so constituents would know where council members stood on the issue.
Supporters expressed fear for what would happen to Baton Rouge if the CATS system were to go bankrupt. They said they want a vibrant bus system that would appeal to more than just people who don't have other options.
Opponents emphasized the magnitude of the hefty property tax and decried the decision to tax only certain parts of the parish.
