Basin Bridge Re-opens, Many Travelers Put Behind Schedule Because of Weather

A big step forward today, as authorities re-opened I-10 in Acadiana and most notably the Basin Bridge. Two days after being shutdown both lanes of I-10 were finally cleared enough for use. DOTD brought all kinds of trucks to help in the effort to get this major interstate-- back open.

"You have have great guys and great ladies that are really skillful in working storms, not just ice storms, but hurricanes and different types of things," DOTD employee and Lafayette resident Anthony Morgan said.

As soon as the all clear was given, trucks hit the road to their destination. Monday, Joaquin Brown was heading back to Texas from this granddaughters graduation in Florida. His bad luck started when his car broke down and was trying to tow it home, but then he was forced to stop because of the weather. What he thought would be a one night stay, turned into three.

"After 12 I had to make a decision to either get the room for another night or leave, and if I leave I have to try to find a way to get to the back way. I didn't want to do that because I thought it might be too icy. So, I just said I'd wait another day," Brown said.

Even with the extra days on the road, Brown knew staying put was his best option.

"It cost me a little extra money, but hey, I'd rather be safe and get home safely, than to get out there and be on the side of the road or in an accident," Brown said.
