Nine horses died in a barn fire Thursday morning on Carmel Dr. in Lafayette. A driver passing by around 4:10 woke up the stable owner after witnessing smoke coming from the barn at 2222 Carmel Dr. Heavy smoke stopped the stable owner and passerby from getting the horses out, Lafayette Fire Dept. Public Information Officer Alton Trahan said.
"When firefighters arrived, flames and smoke were venting through the roof and sides of the barn," Trahan said. Flames were too intense for firefighters to rescue the horses. Within 15 minutes, the fire was under control. "The barn was destroyed. Unfortunately, nine horses perished in the early morning blaze as well," Trahan said.
The horse stalls were leased out to different owners.
