In this tough economy young adults are looking for a stable career path, but also for something they will enjoy.

Some St. Martin Parish high school students have found a job that is both: hairstyling.

"It's fun, it's awesome, I love it, we've learned a lot of stuff," says student Kyra Chavis.

It started with a survey high school students in the parish took 2 years ago. They chose from about 20 technical classes they would enjoy. The winner was hairstyling. This program, which also includes makeup lessons, is one of only two in Acadiana. It started in the spring, but the building officially opened, fully equipped, on Monday.

"If we can get ahold of the kids in high school, it'll help build their career for when they move on to the industry; it's a real good career, I've been in it for 20-some years," said teacher Jennifer Olivier.

The students do not get away with not reading, though. They do have textbooks. They also work in a computer lab with virtual photos to create new hairstyles and looks.

These students from Breaux Bridge High, Cecilia Sr. High, and St. Martinville High School take classes for two years. Upon completion they can work as an assistant to a hairstylist, or finish their hours through the program or a technical college.

They believe it is a solid career choice because, well, everyone needs a haircut.
